Bob is a corporate real estate officer, attorney and former Marine pilot with broad business, leadership and legal experience in real estate acquisitions, development, construction, leasing and litigation. He has worked for national and regional companies and business/real estate law firms where he conducted complex real estate transactions and managed major real estate holdings. His multi-facetted background in law, negotiations, project management, research, writing, analysis, leadership and operations has enabled his success in managing teams in high stress environments to analyze and implement strategies that accomplish organizational objectives.
After receiving a BA degree in Political Science from University of Arizona in 1988, Bob was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He completed Marine Officer's Basic School in Quantico, Virginia and Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida, where he earned a designation as a Marine Naval Aviator. Stationed at MCAS Tustin, California, Bob served as a CH-53E helicopter pilot and deployed on two overseas tours; the first to Okinawa, Japan, and the second with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Ops Capable) during Operation Continue Hope, Mogadishu, Somalia. Bob also held leadership positions as an operations and planning officer and maintenance department supervisor. He received numerous awards and decorations for his service, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Medal and the United Nations Medal (Somalia). While on active duty, Bob earned an MA degree in Business from Webster University, Irvine Campus.
Bob left active duty service in 1995 to attend law school at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a JD Degree in 1998; graduating in the top 1/3 of his law class while clerking for private law firms and interning for the Honorable Carol Mansmann, 3rd Circuit Federal Court of Appeals. Bob returned to Southern California after law school to enter private practice.
After initially working in litigation for a large insurance defense firm in San Diego (Lewis, D'Amato, Brisbois & Bisgaard), Bob's desire to work in real estate brought him to Buckner, Alani and Young, an Orange County boutique shopping center law firm, where he handled both litigation matters and shopping center real estate transactions and retail leasing. In 2001, Bob became in house legal counsel with Realty Income Corporation, a national retail REIT, where he handled a high volume of acquisitions, dispositions, leasing transactions; closing an acquisition, disposition or lease every other week. Bob's tenure with Realty Income was punctuated by 9/11 and his activation by the Marine Corps to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).
Bob joined the Marine Corps Reserves during law school, serving as the Officer in Charge of a Marine Reserve Unit in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and then with the main combat headquarters unit (I MEF) at Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as an Operations Command Center Senior Watch Officer during war game exercises. In November of 2002, Bob was called back to active duty to serve in OIF, and deployed to Camp Doha, Kuwait, where he was personally selected to serve as an Operations Command Center Battle Captain for the commander of all conventional coalition ground forces in Iraq (CFLCC). Bob's performance earned him a position as the personal briefing officer for the CFLCC Commander (Lt.Gen. McKiernan) and his staff during the invasion of Iraq; an outstanding achievement for a Marine Reservist serving in an active duty Army command. On D+01 of OIF, Bob gave the first war brief to General McKiernan and the coalition staff of several hundred officers and televised to outside agencies while ground troops crossed into Iraq. Some of these briefings were highlighted in CNN's "Inside the War Room" special presentation during OIF. For his service, Bob was awarded a Joint Service Commendation Medal and selected for Lieutenant Colonel. After returning from OIF, Bob permanently separated from the Marine Corps.
In 2004, Bob joined the San Diego law firm of Judkins, Glatt & Getz (serving Western U.S. developers and businesses) where he structured, negotiated and closed major real estate acquisitions and dispositions (averaging $10-20MM, the largest being $40MM) for a variety of commercial, industrial and retail properties, including golf courses, apartment buildings, raw land, and shopping centers. In addition to real estate matters, Bob also handled various business and corporate matters for the firm's clients. In 2006, after practicing law for nearly eight years, Bob was recruited by a colleague for a management position with KB Home in Riverside, California. At KB, Bob served as a Land Acquisitions Manager responsible for sourcing, analyzing and closing large residential development acquisitions throughout Riverside County. After declines in the residential market curtailed KB's land acquisition activity, Bob shifted his focus to development and ultimately acted as Project Manager for a 450 lot, master planned community in Riverside County, California, where his planning and development responsibilities spanned all facets of the residential development process. Due to the decline in homebuilding, Bob left KB in 2007 after being invited by the CEO of BrightStar Golf Group (a former client) to join his company as a Vice President and co-owner. Bob was instrumental in the company's acquisition of its portfolio of golf properties throughout the Western U.S. Bob also managed BrightStar's real estate holdings and major capital projects, in addition to serving as BrightStar's in house legal counsel handling various corporate legal matters.
In 2011, after developing significant legal and business experience, Bob started his own law firm as a sole practitioner, handling real estate and business transactions for private clients. His focus is to provide practical and honest legal advice with a unique understanding of the needs and operations of business owners.
Bob is married, and lives in north San Diego County with his wife Kelly and their three children. He is actively involved in the community, having held positions on the Mottino YMCA Board of Management, various City of Oceanside advisory committees and as a Vista Youth Soccer league coach.
